HISTORY OF ST. AUGUSTINE SHORES

In the late 1960's, early 1970's, Frank and Robert Mackle planned a community to be called The St. Augustine Shores.  The Mackle brothers formed the Deltona Corporation to develop and manage the community located 4.5 miles south of St. Augustine, Florida, the "oldest permanent settlement in North America."

The Deltona Corporation started clearing 2020 acres of land for development, leaving many beautiful native Florida trees to add character to the community. As part of the community's plan, several parcels of land were dedicated for recreation, education, and worship facilities.  The Shores has 58 acres set aside for the development of parks and 45 acres designated for recreational sites on the Intracoastal Waterway.  A 12,000 sq ft recreation building is located on the waterway. The Riverview has a 180,000-gallon pool, adjoining a kiddie park, picnic area, horseshoe pits, volleyball, and sports field.  The Riverview Facility houses a 5500 square foot ballroom, a game room, a card room, a library, and kitchen facilities available for rental.  This waterfront property boasts a 500 foot pier with gazebo, that extends into the Intercoastal Waterway and provides an exceptional opportunity for anglers, wildlife observers, and sunrise/sunset seekers who reside in the St. Augustine Shores.  For golfers, there is the St. Augustine Shores Golf Club, a private 18 hole, par 70 course for the veteran and novice golfer.

Today many Shores residents enjoy walking, biking, or jogging along the more than 150 miles of bike paths, sidewalks, and 14 lakes/ponds.  There is a middle school and a high school near the community with W. Douglas Hartley Elementary, an award winning school in St. Johns County,  located within the Shores.  Homeowners also have the convenience of choosing a variety of places of worship within the Shores.

Currently the St. Augustine Shores is a community of more than 3,400 housing units, with more than 6,000 residents.  The homes range from early phase homes from  $250,000 and up, to new luxurious designer homes starting in the $400,000.

The Shores is a community for the couple seeking their first home, the couple looking to scale-down, or the professional hunting for a premier neighborhood featuring a luxury homebuilder.  The newest development in the Shores is coordinated by Homes by Deltona, a division of Deltona Corporation, and is developing quality single-family homes as well as unique luxury condominiums.

The St. Augustine Shores is governed by the St. Augustine Shores Service Corporation (Service Corp).  Each homeowner is a member of the corporation and elect a seven member board of directors to manage and develop policy for the Service Corp.  The board hires a general manager to deal with the day-to-day operations of the association.
